Basilica of the Holy Redeemer, Tiruchirappalli

The Basilica of the Holy Redeemer is a religious building in Tiruchirappalli with substantial walls decorated by oil paintings depicting saints and biblical scenes from both Old and New Testament. The structure can accommodate around 2000 worshippers and incorporates architectural features designed to allow natural light and air movement in tropical conditions.

Construction was begun in February 1880 under Bishop Alexis Canoz and completed within 16 months thanks to contributions from the local Christian community. The land itself was donated by local ruler Diwan Kanjamalai Mudaliar in gratitude toward Reverend Father Koris.

The basilica holds weekly Wednesday novena services dedicated to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, drawing visitors and worshippers from many different backgrounds. These regular gatherings have become an important part of local religious practice.

The basilica is best visited during daylight hours when the interior oil paintings can be clearly seen in natural light. Wednesday services offer a good time to experience the space when it is filled with active worshippers.

The land for the basilica was provided as a personal gesture by the local ruler, reflecting the close relationship between religious and worldly leadership at that time. This connection between the Diwan and the religious community shaped the site's development.
