Tiruchirappalli

Tiruchirappalli sits on the banks of the Kaveri River, spreading across a wide riverbed with sandy shores and green islands. The city shows different neighborhoods with religious structures, university campuses, residential streets and market zones arranged around a rocky hill in the center.

The place was contested during the Carnatic Wars between 1746 and 1763, when British and French forces fought for military control. The city grew in importance afterward as a trade hub and administrative center under British rule until independence.

Local residents climb the Rockfort Temple early in the morning, ascending over four hundred stone steps to the summit. The narrow staircase passes small shrines along the way and offers views over the city rooftops and the river.

An international airport connects travelers to Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian destinations, while road networks offer links to other major cities. Auto rickshaws and local buses run through the city and make journeys between different neighborhoods easier.

Local factories produce much of the energy equipment and boiler components for the country, earning the city its reputation as a heavy industry center. Plants in this area have manufactured turbines and other machinery parts for power stations for decades.
