Ranjankudi Fort

Ranjankudi Fort, Military fort in Perambalur district, India.

Ranjankudi Fort is a stone fortress in Perambalur with three fortification levels, semicircular bastions, and an oblong layout surrounded by a defensive moat. The structure contains interconnected chambers and passages that cross through different vertical sections.

The fortress was built by Vijayanagar Nayaka rulers in the 15th century and became an important military site in South India. It later saw conflict between European powers competing for control of the region.

The fort displays how military architecture developed in South India, mixing local construction methods with defensive strategies from different periods. Walking through it reveals the practical choices builders made to balance strength with layout.

The site is reachable from Chennai via National Highway 45 at a distance of around 250 kilometers. Expect uneven ground and steep steps when exploring the inner chambers and different levels throughout your visit.

The fort contains a network of underground chambers and hidden passages running between different levels that were later built over by additional structures. These tunnels demonstrate how past defenders integrated escape and supply routes into their designs.
