Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary, Bird sanctuary in Ariyalur district, India.
The Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary spans 453.7 hectares of wetland, featuring a freshwater lake fed by Pullambadi and Kattalal canals at 51 meters elevation.
The Tamil Nadu government established this protected area in 1997, and in 2024 the sanctuary received international recognition as a Ramsar wetland site.
Local farmers cultivate paddy, sugarcane, cotton, and corn fields surrounding the sanctuary, using the lake water for agricultural irrigation throughout the year.
Visitors can access the sanctuary through Trichy Airport or Ariyalur Railway Station, with the main entrance located 20 kilometers from Ariyalur Bus Stand.
The sanctuary records between 20,000 and 60,000 birds during winter, including the Greater Spotted Eagle, Oriental Darter, and Black-headed Ibis species.
