Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary is a 453.7 hectare wetland with a freshwater lake fed by two canals at 51 meters elevation. The lake sits among rice fields and farmland that spread across the flat landscape.
The sanctuary was established by the Tamil Nadu government in 1997. In 2024 it gained international recognition as a Ramsar wetland.
The surrounding area depends on rice paddies and farmland that draw irrigation water from the lake year-round. This agricultural tradition shapes daily life in the region.
The sanctuary is best reached via Trichy Airport or Ariyalur Railway Station, with the main entrance about 20 kilometers from Ariyalur Bus Stand. Plan your route ahead depending on where you start from.
Between 20,000 and 60,000 birds arrive during the cooler months, including species like the Greater Spotted Eagle, Oriental Darter, and Black-headed Ibis. This seasonal gathering makes the site a crucial stopover for migrating birds.
