Aiyarappar temple, Hindu temple in Thiruvaiyaru, India
Aiyarappar is a Hindu temple in Thiruvaiyaru organized into two main sections called North Kailasa and South Kailasa, both displaying Dravidian architectural style along the Kaveri River banks. Numerous inscriptions throughout the complex document construction and restoration work undertaken by the Chola, Pandya, and later rulers.
Queen Ulagamadevi, wife of Raja Raja Chola, constructed the North Kailasa section in the late 10th century. Successive rulers from different dynasties later expanded and renovated the temple, each adding layers to its architectural character.
The temple serves as the center of the annual Saptasthanam festival in April, when deities from seven neighboring temples gather for ceremonial processions. Visitors can observe the vibrant rituals and devotional practices that shape local religious life.
The temple sits along the Kaveri River, making a visit pleasant with natural surroundings. Wear comfortable shoes, as exploring the sprawling complex with its two main sections takes time.
A large temple chariot was reconstructed in 2017, featuring 750 hand-carved sculptures and substantial quantities of wood and metal. This chariot is pulled during festive occasions and demonstrates the craftsmanship of local artisans.
