Bhu Varaha Swamy temple, Hindu temple in Srimushnam, Tamil Nadu, India
The Bhu Varaha Swamy temple is a Hindu place of worship in Srimushnam, Tamil Nadu. The complex displays features of Dravidian architecture, including carved pillars, multiple shrines, and ornate gateway towers.
The sanctuary underwent major expansion during the Chola dynasty in the 10th century, supported by royal patronage. Later, the ruler Achyutappa Nayak of Thanjavur added architectural modifications and new decorations in the 16th century.
The name refers to Varaha, Vishnu's incarnation as a divine boar, honored alongside his consort Ambujavalli in the inner sanctuary. Devotees perform rituals throughout the year, with flower offerings and prayers shaping daily life within the temple grounds.
The temple holds six daily prayer sessions and remains open on all weekdays. Buses and auto-rickshaws bring visitors directly to the entrance of the complex.
During the annual chariot festival in spring, Muslim neighbors traditionally provide the ceremonial flag for the procession. This gesture has reflected peaceful exchange between communities in the region for generations.
