Vriddhagiriswarar Temple, Vriddhachalam, Hindu temple in Vriddhachalam, India.
Vriddhagiriswarar is a Hindu temple in Vriddhachalam, Tamil Nadu, India, dedicated to the god Shiva. The complex shows typical Dravidian construction with a tall gopuram at the entrance, stone pillared halls, and numerous carved figures representing deities and mythological scenes.
The temple complex arose during the rule of the Chola dynasty, which shaped South Indian temple construction and built numerous sanctuaries in this region. Later rulers expanded the buildings and added new halls and shrines, so the site grew over several centuries.
The name Vriddhagiriswarar means "Lord of the Ancient Mountain" and refers to the belief that the deity itself is older than creation. Devotees come here seeking blessings for longevity and prosperity, with many elderly people offering special prayers for health in old age.
The temple sits in the center of Vriddhachalam and can be reached on foot or by rickshaw from most accommodations in town. Visitors should cover shoulders and knees and remove shoes before entering the inner areas, as is customary at Hindu temples.
In the courtyard stands an old tree under which devotees tie cloth bands and small votive offerings to voice their wishes. This practice has continued through generations and the tree is revered as sacred because it is said to have grown here since the temple's founding.
