Attur Fort, Military fortification in Salem district, India.

Attur Fort is a stone fortification in Salem district built from wedge-shaped stones stacked without mortar to create thick walls. The complex contains temples, palaces, and administrative buildings that show its role as a major settlement and seat of power.

This fort was founded in the 17th century by Lakshmana Nayakan of the Gatti Mudaliar dynasty as a military and administrative center. Control later passed to the Mysore Kingdom, which ruled the surrounding region for generations.

The temples inside the fort show typical features of southern Indian architecture from medieval times. The rooms and structures were used for religious and administrative purposes, showing how people lived and worshipped in this place.

This site sits on the banks of the Vashista river and is accessible from Salem and surrounding areas. The archaeological department maintains the location with pathways and informational areas for visitors to move around safely.

The magazines inside the fort hold the tombs of two British officers, Lieutenant Colonel John Murray and Henry Coyle, marking the colonial era. A carved image of a mounted soldier on the walls serves as a reminder of the military history embedded in this place.
