Tirunelveli district, Administrative district in Tamil Nadu, India
Tirunelveli is an administrative district in southern Tamil Nadu that runs from the peaks of the Western Ghats to the coast of the Indian Ocean. The district includes several smaller towns and villages as well as agricultural plains fed by one of the few rivers in the region that flows year-round.
The British East India Company established the district in the late 18th century, grouping several areas under a single administration. Later reorganizations divided the original territory into smaller districts that now form separate administrative units.
The region reflects the five landscapes of ancient Tamil literature through its varied geography, from the Agasthiyamalai mountains to the coastal areas.
The Thamirabarani River runs through the district and supplies water to the rice paddies that cover much of the plains. Wind turbines dot the hills to the west, where gusts sweep inland from the sea.
The area produces more wind energy than any other part of Tamil Nadu and harnesses the strong monsoon winds that blow in from the Indian Ocean. Fields of hundreds of turbines spin across the hills and supply power to much of the state.
