Peppara Dam

Peppara Dam is a gravity structure that crosses the Karamana River and creates a large reservoir set in the Western Ghats mountain range. The barrier rises about 36.5 meters high and holds water in a basin surrounded by forested slopes.

The Kerala Water Authority built this facility in the late 20th century to meet growing water needs of Thiruvananthapuram city and nearby regions. The project was part of broader efforts to secure water supply for the expanding urban population.

The structure sits within the Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary, merging water management with protection of the natural environment. Visitors can experience directly how human infrastructure and nature conservation work together in this space.

The best time to visit is during drier months when water levels are stable and pathways are easily accessible. It is wise to wear sturdy footwear and prepare for uneven terrain, as the area is hilly.

Water from the reservoir is controlled and distributed both for the city's drinking supply and to irrigate farmland across the region. This system shows how a single infrastructure serves multiple purposes and supports different human activities in the area.
