Agasthiyar Falls, Cascading waterfall in Papanasam, India.

Agasthiyar Falls is a multi-tiered waterfall fed by the Tamiraparani River in the Western Ghats. The water flows down through a forested valley and gathers into natural pools at the base.

The falls take their name from Sage Agasthya, who according to legend witnessed a divine spectacle at this spot. The site has held spiritual meaning for the surrounding communities for a long time.

The name comes from Sage Agasthya, who is said to have had a sacred vision here according to local tradition. A temple stands at the base of the falls where pilgrims bathe in the water and offer prayers.

The falls are inside a protected reserve near Papanasam and can be visited throughout the year, though water flow is at its strongest from May through December. Paths can become muddy and rocks slippery after rain, so sturdy footwear is a good idea.

The falls sit within a reserve that shelters rare wildcats and other forest animals, which are occasionally spotted near the water. This makes the spot one of the few places in the region where a waterfall visit might also turn into a wildlife sighting.
