Aryankavu Sastha Temple

Aryankavu Sastha is a Hindu temple located in the border area between Pathanamthitta and Kollam districts in southern Kerala. The sanctuary sits about 11 meters below road level and visitors descend 18 stone steps to reach the main shrine dedicated to Lord Ayyappa.

The temple emerged in a border region that once connected different kingdoms and gained importance through the Ayyappa religious tradition. The original deity was originally carved from Anjanapashanam stone before being replaced with a new figure cast from panchaloha, a five-metal alloy.

The temple blends Kerala traditions in its inner rituals with Tamil customs during public celebrations, showing how this border location draws from two regions. Visitors notice these different practices existing side by side throughout the year.

The temple sits near National Highway 744 and is accessible by car, roughly 73 kilometers from Kollam and 33 kilometers from Punalur. Access involves descending a steep stone staircase, so visitors should wear comfortable shoes and allow time for the descent.

Lord Ayyappa is worshipped here as a youthful deity called Tiru Aryan, depicted seated on an elephant alongside his companion Pushkala and the god Shiva. This portrayal sets this temple apart from other Ayyappa shrines found in the region.
