Lakshadweep, Union territory in Arabian Sea, India

Description

Lakshadweep is a union territory made up of 36 islands in the Arabian Sea, with only ten inhabited and spread across a total area of 32 square kilometers. The islands sit between 200 and 440 kilometers (125 to 270 miles) off the southwest coast of India, and most are surrounded by shallow lagoons and coral reefs.

History

The territory was granted union status on November 1st, 1956, after India gained independence, marking the shift from British colonial rule. Before that, the islands had been influenced by Arab traders for centuries and later came under Portuguese and British control.

Culture

Malayalam and English are spoken across the islands, while daily life follows the rhythm of fishing boats and coconut harvests. Local traditions remain closely tied to the sea and palm groves, and people maintain a quiet, reserved way of living.

Practical

Visitors need to secure a special permit from the Lakshadweep administration before traveling, with most journeys starting from Kochi in Kerala by ship or flight. It helps to check travel conditions and weather patterns ahead of time, as access depends on favorable sea conditions.

Did you know?

The territory enforces strict environmental protections to preserve its coral reefs, which support more than 600 fish species in the surrounding waters. Visitor numbers are tightly controlled to safeguard the delicate ecosystems, making these islands some of the least visited coastal areas in India.
