Athirappilly Falls, Waterfall in Thrissur District, Kerala, India.

Athirappilly Falls is a waterfall in Thrissur District, Kerala, India, where the Chalakudy River drops over a rocky ledge into a deep pool. The cascade splits into several streams that swell into a wide front during monsoon season and separate into individual channels during the dry months.

The waterfall became known outside Kerala when plans for a hydroelectric project upstream were discussed in the 1980s. This debate drew attention from conservationists to the region and its importance for rare animal species.

The name comes from Malayalam and refers to the river depth at this location, which visitors can still hear about in explanations from local guides. Fishers from nearby villages traditionally use the calmer stretches downstream for their work, especially during the dry season.

Several viewing platforms offer different perspectives on the waterfall, with the lowest one allowing the closest view. The paths can become slippery during rain, so sturdy footwear is advisable.

The surrounding forest area hosts four endangered hornbill species at once, a combination found nowhere else in the Western Ghats. Early morning hours offer the best chance to spot these large birds flying over the river.
