Paniyeli Poru

Paniyeli Poru is a water park where the Periyar River flows through rocky formations, creating natural pools and small waterfalls. The surroundings feature dense rainforest and verdant hillocks that frame these water features.

The name comes from local raftsmen who transported bamboo logs through challenging river waters in past centuries. These historical boatmen gave the place its identity and enduring name.

Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu film crews have regularly shot scenes here since the 2000s, attracted by the river's natural rock formations and lush surroundings. The location has become a favorite spot for regional cinema productions seeking dramatic water landscapes.

The best time to visit is between November and May when river flow decreases and exposes natural rock formations suitable for swimming. These months offer the most favorable conditions for exploring.

The Kerala State Forest Department maintains this natural recreation area within a protected wildlife zone inhabited by deer, wild boar, and pythons. This makes it a rare place where water recreation and wildlife observation blend naturally.
