Cheeyappara Waterfalls, Natural waterfall in Idukki district, India
Cheeyappara is a waterfall in Idukki district that drops in seven distinct tiers down rocky cliffs. The cascade sits right beside the main highway between Neriamangalam and Adimali, surrounded by thickly forested mountain slopes.
The waterfall sits on the Kochi–Dhanushkodi national highway between Neriamangalam and Adimali, a route that made it a standard stop for travellers heading to Munnar. Its flow depends on the Ozhuvathadam stream: when forest in the Ozhuvathadam and Valara areas was cleared, the summer current began to fail and the falls dried up in the dry season.
Cheeyappara is a main stopover point for visitors travelling to Munnar, on the Kochi–Dhanushkodi national highway between Neriamangalam and Adimali. The name pairs the Malayalam words for "bitter" and "rock". The stream feeding the falls comes from the Ozhuvathadam area, and clearing of the Ozhuvathadam and Valara forests is blamed for the falls drying up in summer.
The falls sit beside National Highway 85, on the Neriamangalam–Adimali stretch about 20 km along the Munnar road. The cascade is seen from the roadside; trekking and hiking trails also lead to it. Flow is heavy in the monsoon and nearly dry in summer, when the stream from the Ozhuvathadam area stops running.
The stream feeding the falls rises in the Ozhuvathadam forest area; when logging cleared Ozhuvathadam and Valara, the summer flow began to fail, and the cascade now dries to a trickle in the dry season. It lies about 20 km along the Munnar road from the Neriamangalam–Adimali stretch.
