Nagaon district, Administrative district in Central Assam division, India
Nagaon is an administrative district in the Central Assam division situated along the Brahmaputra River. The territory encompasses river valleys, plains, and hills with the town of Nagaon serving as its main administrative center.
The district was established in 1833 under the name Khagarijan and later incorporated into various colonial administrative regions. Its boundaries and administrative role shifted several times as the region passed under different governance systems.
The region is dotted with Namghars, traditional Vaishnavite shrines found throughout villages and towns. These structures show how deeply faith shapes everyday life and community gatherings.
The district is well connected by road and rail to major cities in Assam, making travel straightforward. Visiting is easiest during the cooler months when weather conditions are most favorable for moving around.
Before a neighboring district separated in 2016, this region held the distinction of being among Assam's most populous areas. This historical importance still shows in how the main town functions as a trading and administrative hub today.
