Navi Mumbai, Planned satellite city near Mumbai, India
Navi Mumbai is a planned satellite city in Thane and Raigad districts, connected to the main Mumbai area by bridges and trains. The city divides into numbered sectors spreading across flat former farmland between coastline and hills.
The development corporation began construction in 1972 to ease pressure on Mumbai by acquiring land from dozens of villages. Over the following decades, the city grew from empty fields into residential and business districts with their own infrastructure.
The name means "New Mumbai" in Marathi, reflecting its role as a planned alternative to the crowded older city. Each sector contains markets, temples, and parks where residents gather for daily life and festivals.
The city is easiest to reach by train from Mumbai Central using either the Harbour Line or Trans-Harbour Line. Roads are wide and clearly laid out, with most sectors using numbered streets and clear signage.
Flocks of flamingos use the preserved wetlands along the coastal roads as resting spots during their migrations. These birds are visible throughout the year, feeding in the shallow tidal zones next to high-rises and traffic.
