Calicut International Airport, International airport in Kondotty, India
Calicut International Airport is an aerodrome in Malappuram district, India, offering passenger connections within the country and toward the Gulf region. The terminal spreads across elevated ground overlooking forested hills, with check-in counters, shops, and waiting areas for domestic and international travelers.
The facility opened in 1988 under the name Karipur and initially handled regional routes. In 2006, after expansion work, it was upgraded to international status and received its current name.
The name Karipur comes from the local community and recalls the village on whose land the facility was built. For communities across Malabar, this airport remains the gateway to work opportunities and family abroad.
Travelers reach the site by bus or taxi from Kozhikode, roughly 28 kilometers away. The grounds include waiting rooms, restrooms, and simple food and drink stands for short stays.
The runway runs on a plateau with slopes at both ends, requiring special approach techniques. Pilots adjust speed and angle during the final phase to land safely on the short level surface.
