Punjab, Geographic region in northern India and eastern Pakistan.

Punjab is a widespread region in northern India and eastern Pakistan, stretching over flat plains cut by five rivers: Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej, and Beas. These waterways shape a landscape of fertile fields, irrigated farmland, and networks of canals that organize the low terrain.

The area hosted settlements of the Indus Valley Civilization from 3300 BCE before Indo-Aryan groups migrated in and farmed permanently along the riverbanks. Later, Persian, Greek, Muslim, and Sikh rulers shaped the political boundaries and religious traditions of the region in succession.

As you travel through villages and towns, you encounter lively folk dances like Bhangra, colorful festivals tied to harvest seasons, and communities gathering daily in temples and gurdwaras. Families keep the Punjabi language alive and serve richly spiced dishes made from freshly milled flour and dairy straight from the farm, shaping daily rhythms across the countryside.

Traveling through the region requires preparation for long distances between settlements and dusty roads, especially after harvest in spring and autumn. Simple lodging and meals can be found in nearly every larger town, while remote rural areas may be harder to reach.

The partition of 1947 drew a new political boundary straight through fields and villages, separating families and settlements but leaving shared music, language, and food habits intact. To this day, the meals, songs, and dances on both sides of the border resemble each other closely, despite separate administrations.
