Aurangabad

Aurangabad is a city in Maharashtra located in the Marathwada region of western India. The built-up area spreads across hilly terrain near the Kaum River and includes residential neighborhoods, commercial streets and sprawling outskirts.

The settlement began in 1610 under the name Khadki when a minister of the Ahmadnagar Sultanate founded it. Later a Mughal emperor chose it as headquarters for his operations in the Deccan and renamed it in the 1650s.

The city takes its name from the Mughal emperor who established his base in the Deccan here. Today this connection is preserved through architectural details in public buildings and the names of historic neighborhoods that visitors discover while walking through the streets.

The airport connects the city with other major centers across the country while trains and buses offer regional links. Streets are busiest in the mid-morning and late afternoon so exploring central areas early in the day works well.

The city contains gates from different centuries scattered along old fortification lines. Each gate shows a distinct building style that reflects the era when it was built and offers a glimpse of earlier city boundaries when passing through.
