Bibi Ka Maqbara, Mughal mausoleum in Aurangabad, India.
Bibi Ka Maqbara is a mausoleum set within formal gardens in central Aurangabad, India. The central dome sits atop a rectangular marble structure flanked by four tall corner towers, approached through a wide water channel running down the middle of the grounds.
Construction began in 1660 following the death of the prince's mother, for whom this memorial was raised. Work lasted about ten years, bringing stonemasons from across the realm to complete the project.
The name refers to the lady buried here, using an honorary title common at the Mughal court. Visitors walking through the arcades notice the blend of Persian forms and local craftsmanship in every carved detail.
You enter the complex through the main gateway and walk along the central path toward the main building. The chambers inside are accessible by stairway, and arriving early in the day helps avoid larger groups.
The actual burial chamber lies below ground level, reached by descending a flight of steps and looking through a carved screen. This lower level stays cool even when the sun heats the marble above.
