Thane, Metropolitan city in Thane district, India
Thane is a metropolitan city in Maharashtra that sits on the northeastern edge of Salsette Island, directly adjacent to Mumbai. The city spreads across relatively flat terrain at about 8 meters (26 feet) above sea level, with several natural lakes and low hills shaping the surrounding area.
The settlement began in ancient times under the name Taxashila and passed through the hands of the Maurya, Mughal and Maratha empires over the centuries. The British later used the location as a military outpost, which helped shape the modern city.
The population reflects Maharashtra's diversity through celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi and Diwali, with Hindus comprising 73 percent of the residents.
The city railway station serves as a central hub connecting Mumbai's suburban rail network with frequent trains for commuters throughout the day. The main station sits in the center of town and is easy to reach by bus, auto-rickshaw or taxi.
Several lakes wind through the city and offer residents a place for evening or early morning walks along the water. Masunda Lake and Upvan Lake are among the most frequented, where joggers and birdwatchers often gather.
