Jhansi, Administrative city in Uttar Pradesh, India
Jhansi is an administrative center in western Bundelkhand that sits on a plain near the Betwa River and is overlooked by an old fort on a rocky hill. Buildings spread between narrow lanes in the older core and wider streets in newer neighborhoods, while gardens and open spaces break up the urban layout.
Raja Bir Singh Deo of Orchha built the fort in 1613 and founded a settlement initially called Balwant Nagar. The town later became a focal point during the uprising of 1857 and afterwards grew into an important node for trade and administration in the region.
The name comes from the Hindi word for thorny scrubland that once covered the site before the fort was built. Residents gather at the river ghats for bathing and religious ceremonies, especially during local festivals.
The town can be reached through a railway junction linked to many major cities in India, while auto-rickshaws and cycle rickshaws help move around locally. Visitors are advised to start early in the morning to avoid the heaviest heat of the day, especially during the summer months.
A steel-rolling mill operates on the edge of town and shows the industrial side of this otherwise mostly agricultural and education-centered area. Local traders sell products from the region, including grain and handcrafted goods, that help shape the economic life of the town.
