Jhansi Fort

Jhansi Fort rises from Bangira hill as a defensive stronghold with massive granite walls measuring 5 to 6 meters thick. The complex sprawls across a substantial area with multiple gates, inner structures, and temple buildings that reflect different periods of construction and use.

The Karhade Brahmin rulers built this defensive structure during the 17th century as a strategic military stronghold. It later became the center of resistance under Rani Lakshmibai in 1858, when she fought against British forces occupying her territory.

The fort holds temples dedicated to Hindu deities Ganesha and Shiva, where visitors can observe people praying and leaving offerings. The Baradari structure stands as a reminder of how local rulers honored their family bonds and maintained their spiritual traditions.

Visitors can enter the fort through several gates, with the nearest railway station about 3 kilometers away in the city. Coming early provides better lighting and fewer crowds for exploring the grounds and climbing the hill.

The Kadak Bijli cannon at the entrance fired during the 1857 uprising and remains as a physical reminder of those conflicts. Few visitors realize this gun actually played a role in the battles that took place here.
