Chaturbhuj Temple, Orchha, Hindu temple in Orchha, India.
Chaturbhuj Temple is a Hindu place of worship in Orchha, rising within the old fort complex and visible from a distance due to its prominent silhouette. Its massive stone walls support a central tower, while several stories display finely worked reliefs.
Construction started in 1558 under King Madhukar Shah and was later completed during the reign of his son Vir Singh Deo. This period is considered the height of Bundela building craft in the region.
The name refers to a deity with four arms that was originally intended for worship here according to local tradition. Upon entering, the tall chambers feel more like a palace than a religious building.
Access is via 67 steep steps leading to the entrance platform, located south of Ram Raja Temple. Those visiting should allow time to explore the different levels and side chambers.
The structure stands on an artificial island created by the Betwa River. This unusual location makes it visible from many points around the area.
