Sriharikota, Space research facility on Sriharikota Island, Andhra Pradesh, India
Sriharikota is an island and spaceport facility in Andhra Pradesh, located roughly 80 kilometers north of Chennai on the southeastern coast. The island stretches about 18 kilometers in length and separates Pulicat Lake from the open sea through sandy shores and dense vegetation.
The Indian space agency began constructing launch facilities on the then-remote island in the late 1960s. The site was renamed after rocket scientist Satish Dhawan after it had served national satellite missions and lunar programs for decades.
Local fishermen still work Pulicat Lake and use waterways as they have for centuries, despite rocket launches nearby. Visitors notice small villages along the roads where traditional fishing and modern space industry coexist side by side.
The area is restricted for security purposes, especially during launch windows, and access requires prior clearance. Travelers should check plans ahead and confirm current access policies with relevant authorities.
The launch pads face the ocean so rockets fly over water and avoid populated areas, creating a clear safety corridor. Flamingos and other migratory birds regularly use the wetlands around the facility as resting grounds, unbothered by the occasional rocket launch.
