Rewalsar, town in Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh, India
Rewalsar is a small town in the hills of Himachal Pradesh, India, centered around a calm lake surrounded by temples and monasteries. The settlement sits at about 4,450 feet (1,360 meters) elevation and features simple streets with religious structures and guest houses spread along the water's edge.
The site connects to multiple faiths: Hindus link it to the ancient Pandavas epic, with temples built during their exile, while Buddhists associate it with Guru Padmasambhava, who legend says appeared in the lake. Sikh Guru Gobind Singh visited in the 17th century, leading to the construction of a gurudwara.
The town draws Hindu, Buddhist, and Sikh pilgrims who come to honor their faith traditions in shared spaces. Temples, monasteries, and shrines sit close together around the lake, reflecting how different religions respect the same sacred landscape.
The best time to visit is spring and autumn when weather is mild, with warm summers and cold, snowy winters possible. The town is reached by bus or taxi from larger cities, with the nearest airport in Kullu about 70 kilometers away and railway station at Kiratpur Sahib about 110 kilometers distant.
A giant statue of Guru Padmasambhava was blessed by the Dalai Lama and draws Buddhist pilgrims from Nepal, Bhutan, and China. Legend says he miraculously appeared in the lake after being burned by a king, becoming protector of Tibetan Buddhism.
