Sonipat district, Administrative division in Haryana, India
Sonipat is an administrative district in Haryana in northern India, covering around 2,260 square kilometers (870 square miles). It is organized into four administrative subdivisions that together manage about 343 villages and handle local governance across the region.
The district was created in 1972 from the division of the former Rohtak district, taking its name from Sonprastha, a Sanskrit term meaning Golden City. This administrative change established a new separate unit within the region's governance structure.
The area is shaped by agricultural traditions and daily life, with residents speaking Haryanvi and Hindi in their communities. Local celebrations follow the rhythms of seasons and mark important moments in village and family life.
The best time to visit is from October to March when the weather is moderate and travel is comfortable. The district is well-connected to other parts of Haryana and Delhi through regular bus services and road networks linking the four administrative subdivisions.
The area hosts several respected universities, including O.P. Jindal Global University and Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram University of Science and Technology, which have made it an educational center. These institutions attract students from across the country and shape the social environment of the region.
