Arikamedu, Archaeological site in Puducherry district, India.
Along the Ariyankuppam river, ancient stone columns and remnants of walls stand beside deteriorated French Jesuit Mission structures from the eighteenth century.
Sir Mortimer Wheeler and Jean-Marie Casal conducted excavations at Arikamedu in 1945, revealing structures and artifacts from maritime trading between Rome and India.
The excavation site contains evidence of early bead production, along with discoveries of amphorae, glassware, gold objects, stone beads, coins, and ancient lamps.
Visitors can access this archaeological site without entrance fees between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM daily, with October through February offering mild weather conditions.
Archaeological findings demonstrate that Arikamedu functioned as a major trading port connecting European nations with Rome from 200 BCE until 800 BCE.
