Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Gothic Revival church in Pondicherry, India
The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a Gothic Revival church on Pondicherry's South Boulevard, built in a Latin cross plan measuring 50 m long, 48 m wide and 18 m high. Twenty-four interior columns support the structure, and stained glass panels depict 28 saints linked to devotion to the Sacred Heart.
Construction began in the early 1900s under French direction and the structure was consecrated a few years later. The church later received recognition as a basilica, reflecting its importance in the region.
The interior features colored glass windows depicting scenes from the life of Jesus and Catholic saints that visitors notice while walking through. These artistic windows shape how the space feels and give it a particular character.
The building is open to visitors during daylight hours, with early morning and evening times being quieter for walking through. Visitors should wear appropriate clothing and be respectful of religious activities taking place inside.
Above the entrance door, the Latin inscription reads "sanctificavi locum istum, ut sit nomen meum ibi", taken from 2 Chronicles 7:16. The French source gives a variant wording, "ut sit cor meum ibi". The verse states that God has consecrated this house so that his name and heart remain there forever.
