Pondicherry lighthouse, Maritime navigation tower in Pondicherry, India.
Pondicherry lighthouse is a stone tower standing on the coast with a cylindrical shape, a balcony, and a green dome at its peak. The structure rises about 27 meters above the water and offers views of the bay and coastline from the top.
The tower was built in 1836 during French colonial rule and served as a key navigation point for ships in the region. Later, an electric lighting system was installed in 1913 to improve visibility at night.
The lighthouse functions as a central government institution under India's Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, maintaining maritime navigation standards.
Entry to visit the site requires a small fee and hours run daily from morning to evening. Visitors should prepare for a steep climb if they want to reach the observation deck.
The lighthouse beam rotates completely in 36 seconds and reaches vessels up to 26 nautical miles away, using an electric lighting system installed in 1913.
