Our Lady of Angels Church, Puducherry, church in Puducherry, India
Our Lady of Angels Church is a place of worship in Puducherry with two tall towers on its front facade and white walls facing the sea. Inside, high ceilings, a marble altar, and colored glass windows create a calm space where light filters softly throughout the building.
Construction began in 1851 following a design by Louis Guerre and the building opened four years later in 1855. It replaced earlier chapels that had stood on this spot since 1707, carrying centuries of French and religious history within its structure.
The church brings together people from different backgrounds who pray in French, Tamil, and English each week. This linguistic mix reflects how the community in Puducherry has grown over time, making worship here a gathering point for diverse voices and traditions.
Entry is free and the church opens daily from early morning until evening, with wheelchair accessible ramps for all visitors. The best time to visit is between October and March when the weather is comfortable and the space feels less crowded.
A statue of Joan of Arc in full armor stands in the garden beside the church, a gift from a French politician placed there in 1923. This sculpture remains a symbol of the deep historical connection between France and this city.
