Biligiriranga Hills, Nature reserve and mountain range in Chamarajanagar, India
Biligiriranga Hills is a mountain range and nature reserve in Chamarajanagar in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. The hills form a transition between the Western and Eastern Ghats and display forest types from dry to evergreen.
The Karnataka government created a wildlife sanctuary here in 1974 for elephants and other threatened species. In 2011 the area received tiger reserve status.
The name Biligiri means white cliffs and refers to pale rock formations that stand out against the green forest cover. Local Soliga people gather forest products and maintain small settlements scattered through these wooded slopes.
Access is through Yelandur or Chamarajanagar, with Mysore as the nearest major city about 90 kilometers (56 miles) away. Within the reserve unpaved roads run through the different forest zones.
A rare population of white-winged tits lives here, found in few other places across southern India. The plant life includes over 800 species and makes the area a hotspot for botanists.
