Mattupetty Dam, Storage dam in Idukki, India
Mattupetty Dam is a concrete gravity dam located in the mountains of Idukki, Kerala, spanning roughly 237 meters and rising about 85 meters high. The structure holds water that supplies the surrounding region for irrigation and power generation.
Construction began in 1949 under engineer E.U. Philipose and was completed in 1953 by the Kerala State Electricity Board. The project marked an important step in developing the region's infrastructure and water management systems.
The dam serves communities across the region, providing water for farming and electricity generation that shapes daily life in the area. Local residents depend on this reservoir for their agricultural and domestic needs.
The site is most easily reached from nearby Munnar and offers views overlooking the surrounding mountain slopes. Visitors can also take boat rides on the reservoir to explore the landscape more fully.
