Ajaikapada Bhairava Temple, Hindu temple in Jagatsinghpur district, India
Ajaikapada Bhairava Temple is a Hindu temple in the Sathalapada area of Jagatsinghpur district, Odisha, with a four-armed image of Bhairava as its main deity. The shrine sits beside the Alaka River and also houses a Shivalinga within the same space.
The temple was built over a thousand years ago and is among the older shrines in the Odisha region. Flooding from the Alaka River required repairs over the centuries, though the basic form of the structure has been kept.
Worshippers visit to pray before the four-armed form of Bhairava, a deity associated with protection and power in the Shaiva tradition. The river nearby plays a part in local rituals, since water holds a central place in many acts of Hindu devotion.
The temple can be reached from the nearby town of Nuagaon, and local transport covers most of the route. The final stretch passes through rural land, so sturdy footwear is a good idea, as the paths are not always paved.
The deity here is linked to the star Purva Bhadrapada in Hindu astrology, which makes this temple a destination for people born under that star. This kind of direct connection between a local shrine and a specific star is not common, setting this place apart from most temples nearby.
