Adinatha Perumal Temple, Hindu temple in Thoothukudi district, India.
Alwarthirunagari Permual Temple is a Hindu sanctuary in Thoothukudi district featuring carved stone pillars, tiered towers, and detailed sculptures throughout its structure. The walls and corridors display scenes from Hindu mythology that reflect the spiritual traditions maintained within.
The temple is glorified in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham, the Tamil Vaishnava canon of the 6th–9th centuries CE, and is one of the 108 Divya Desams. It is also the foremost of the nine Navatirupathi temples revered by Nammalvar on the banks of the Tamiraparani. The Brahmanda Purana's Navatirupati Mahatmyam refers to the site, and it appears in 18th–19th century works such as the 108 Tirupati Anthati.
The name Alwarthirunagari combines Alvar with thirunagari, explained in tradition as "those who spoke languages first and speak correct language". Nammalvar, born here, is credited with over a thousand of the four thousand verses of the Naalayira Divya Prabandham. The ten-day Brahmotsavam in the Tamil month of Chittirai and the Nammalvar birth celebrations with Garudasevai drawing all nine Navatirupathi temples are the main observances.
The sanctuary is typically open during early morning and evening hours, with extended access during major religious celebrations and festivals. Comfortable footwear is recommended, and visitors should follow local customs when entering sacred areas of the complex.
The site is revered as the birthplace of Nammalvar, one of the twelve Alvar saints who composed devotional poetry in Tamil. This connection to an influential spiritual poet gives the location particular significance for followers of this mystical tradition.
