Puducherry Legislative Assembly, Legislative Assembly building in Puducherry, India
The Puducherry Legislative Assembly is the lawmaking body of this Union Territory in India and meets in a former medical college building on Victor Simonel Street. The structure displays colonial-era architecture with wide verandas and white columns that recall French administrative tradition.
The assembly began its work in 1963 after the French territories integrated into India. It replaced the earlier Pondicherry Representative Assembly established in 1954.
The legislature reflects both Indian and French administrative traditions, with 30 elected members and three nominated representatives who hold equal voting rights.
The building sits in the government quarter of the town and is generally not accessible to the public during session periods. Visitors can view the exterior façade from the pavement and explore the colonial architecture of the area.
Five seats in the assembly are reserved for candidates from disadvantaged communities, while three additional members receive appointment from the central government. These nominated representatives hold the same voting rights as elected members in all parliamentary procedures.
