Gudiyam Caves, Archaeological cave system in Thiruvallur District, India.
The Gudiyam cave complex contains sixteen rock shelters spread across the Allikulli Hill ranges near the Poondi reservoir in Tamil Nadu.
British geologist Robert Bruce Foote discovered these caves, which contain evidence of Paleolithic settlements dating between 1,000,000 and 12,000 years ago.
The Archaeological Survey of India conducted excavations in 1963 and 1964, uncovering tools and artifacts that document early human life in South India.
Reaching the caves requires a 4-kilometer trek from Gudiyam village, making it necessary to carry sufficient water and food supplies.
Research from these caves provides evidence that early hominids migrated extensively across this region approximately 200,000 years ago.
