Sri Vadaranyeswarar Temple

Sri Vadaranyeswarar Temple is a Hindu temple in Tiruvallur district with three corridors and a five-tiered main tower. The structure includes several shrines and columned halls that provide visitors with different spaces for prayer and exploration.

Built in the 12th century by the Chola dynasty, the temple bears inscriptions spanning from the reign of King Paranthaka Chola-I through the Vijayanagara period. These carved records show how the temple evolved through different ruling periods.

This temple holds a sacred place in Tamil religious tradition as one of 275 holy locations mentioned in ancient devotional texts dedicated to Lord Shiva. Pilgrims visit regularly to participate in prayers and rituals that have been performed here for centuries.

Legend tells of a dance competition between Lord Shiva and Goddess Kali in the Natarajar sanctuary, where Shiva performed an upward-turned movement. This mythological event is deeply rooted in local religious tradition and holds special meaning for the temple.
