Tiruvallur district, Administrative district in Tamil Nadu, India.
Tiruvallur is an administrative division in the state of Tamil Nadu that spreads north and northwest of Chennai across flat land and gentle hills. The territory includes both agricultural areas where rice and groundnuts grow, as well as industrial and residential zones that belong to the metropolitan region.
The area was created in 1997 when parts of the former Chingleput division were reorganized to better manage the growing population. This split marked the end of a colonial administrative structure that emerged in the 19th century under British rule.
The area takes its name from the town of Tiruvallur, which once hosted an important temple complex. Today the region alternates between villages with rice paddies and smaller towns with residential neighborhoods, while worshippers continue to visit places of prayer.
Travelers moving across the different parts of this area will find bus connections and several railway lines linking villages to Chennai. The best time to visit is between November and February, when temperatures are cooler and humidity drops.
The division contains Pulicat Lake, a lagoon that attracts flamingos and other water birds during the migratory season. Archaeologists have found stone-age tools and pottery shards in some areas, showing a long record of settlement.
