Chennai Suburban Railway, Commuter rail network in Chennai, India
Chennai Suburban Railway is a commuter rail network in Chennai, India, operating four main corridors along the coast and inland. Trains stop at over one hundred stations, linking the city center with residential and industrial areas throughout the metropolitan region.
Electric train service began in April 1931 with carriages from England on the route between Madras Beach and Tambaram. Additional corridors were added over the following decades as the network grew with the expanding city.
The railway stations display bilingual signs in Tamil and English, reflecting the linguistic diversity of the Tamil Nadu region and its transportation system.
Trains run from early morning until late at night, with frequent services during peak hours for commuters heading to work or returning home. Most stations are accessible on foot and are located near bus stops and other public transport links.
The trains use electric multiple units that are serviced and repaired at three maintenance facilities located in different parts of the city. These facilities ensure trains can run daily without long interruptions for technical work.
