Victoria Public Hall, Indo-Saracenic building in Chennai, India
Victoria Public Hall is a colonial administrative building with three floors and Indo-Saracenic architectural details in Chennai. The exterior features ornate terracotta work, arcaded sections, and stone columns arranged along its walls.
Construction began in 1886 and was completed between 1888 and 1890 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. The project was overseen by architect Robert Fellowes Chisholm.
The hall served for decades as a stage for Tamil theater companies and continues to host local artistic performances. This role has made it an important place for the region's performing arts.
The main hall is located on the first floor and accommodates approximately 600 people with good sightlines and acoustics. The ground floor is easily accessible and allows visitors to explore the architectural details of the entrance areas.
The founding meeting of the Justice Party, which launched the Dravidian Movement, took place here on November 20, 1916. This was a pivotal moment in the region's social and political history.
