A sage named Agastya is believed to have established the site several centuries ago for Shiva worship. Later rulers and communities expanded the complex with additional halls and towers over time.

The complex opens in the morning and again in the afternoon, closing for a midday break. Buses from central Chennai run to Thiruvanmiyur and stop near the eastern entrance.
The name translates to 'God of Medicine,' and many people come here seeking healing. Water from the temple tank is considered to have medicinal properties and is used by worshippers for drinking or applying to the skin.
