Jayakwadi Dam, Irrigation dam in Paithan, Maharashtra, India
Jayakwadi Dam is a water barrier on the Godavari River in Paithan, Maharashtra, forming the Nath Sagar reservoir behind it. The structure runs roughly ten kilometers across the river valley and stands over 40 meters tall.
Construction began in the mid-1960s to secure water supply and irrigation for the region. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi opened the facility to the public in February 1976.
The Dnyaneshwar Udyan garden near the dam spans 125 hectares, featuring plant collections and landscaping that represent regional horticultural traditions.
The facility supplies water to several districts in the region and enables irrigation of more than 170,000 hectares of farmland. A landscaped garden called Dnyaneshwar Udyan covers 125 hectares near the barrier and is open for visitors to explore.
A designated bird sanctuary lies within the Nath Sagar reservoir and includes numerous small islands. More than 200 different bird species use this habitat throughout the year, including many migratory visitors.
