The institution began in 1707 as the first hospital in Calcutta inside the Old Fort compound. In 1954 it received its current name honoring benefactor Seth Sukhlal Karnani.
Sir Ronald Ross carried out research here that led to the discovery of how malaria spreads through mosquitoes. His work transformed the understanding of tropical diseases and earned him the 1902 Nobel Prize in Medicine.
The emergency department operates around the clock while outpatient departments open daily from 9 AM to 2 PM. The hospital offers both free beds and private rooms across its different wards.
