The 42, Residential skyscraper in Kolkata, India
The 42 is a residential tower with 63 floors reaching 260 meters (853 feet) in height, located on Chowringhee Road in central Kolkata. The glass and reinforced concrete construction forms a slender silhouette with a pointed spire visible from many parts of the city.
The land previously belonged to the Maharaja of Darbhanga before construction began in 2008 and finished eleven years later in 2019. Neighboring buildings filed lawsuits during the building phase over shadow and sight line concerns, causing delays.
The name comes from the street number 42 on Chowringhee Road, one of Kolkata's most recognizable addresses. Residents on upper floors have direct views of the Maidan park and can see as far as the Hooghly River, something rare in the densely built center.
The building stands between Tata Centre and Jeevan Sudha at a busy intersection with good access to public transport. Pedestrians reach the entrance from the main road where sidewalks run along the entire facade.
Outside Mumbai this stands as the tallest building in all of India, surpassing every other structure in eastern and northern regions. The spire was built separately and lifted by crane onto the roof, a process that took several days and brought the total to exactly 260 meters (853 feet).
