New Market, Market complex in Dharmatala, India.
New Market is a covered commercial complex in Victorian Gothic style on Lindsay Street in Dharmatala, housing more than 2,000 vendor stalls across multiple floors. The stalls are arranged by product category and offer textiles, jewelry, spices, confectionery, fresh produce, and seafood.
The complex opened in 1874 as Sir Stuart Hogg Market after the municipal authorities acquired the site on Lindsay Street to establish a central trading place. Following Indian independence, it received its present name and remained a major draw for commerce in the city.
The market carries its present name since independence and is visited daily by local families who shop here for fresh food and household goods. Among the aisles, you hear Bengali and Hindi as vendors call out their goods and regular customers look for familiar faces.
The market opens daily except Sundays from 10 AM to 8 PM and is within walking distance from Esplanade Metro Station. Numerous bus routes stop on Lindsay Street near the entrances to the complex.
In one corner of the complex, the confectionery Nahoum & Sons has been operating since 1902 and sells pastries prepared according to traditional recipes. The old wooden fixtures and the large oven from its founding years are still in use today.
