New Empire Cinema, Heritage movie theater in New Market, Kolkata, India
New Empire Cinema is a heritage-listed movie theater on Humayun Place in the New Market area of Kolkata, India, classified as a KMC Heritage Building Grade I. It operates as a single-screen venue with a main auditorium that holds around 1,000 seats.
The building was designed in 1932 by architect A. de Bois Shrosbree and originally opened as a venue for theater and ballet. By the 1950s it had shifted to showing films, which has remained its main purpose ever since.
The New Empire is one of the few cinemas in Kolkata that still retains much of its original interior from the early 20th century. The entrance hall and decorative details give a strong sense of what a night out at the theater looked like in the city decades ago.
The theater is within walking distance of the New Market area, making it easy to reach on foot from the surrounding streets. It is worth arriving a little early, as the neighborhood can get busy and parking nearby may be limited.
Before becoming a cinema, the building hosted world-class performers such as violinist Yehudi Menuhin and conductor Zubin Mehta. Many visitors today are surprised to learn that this film hall once drew some of the greatest names in classical music.
