St. John's Church, Anglican church in Kolkata, India

The square building features a 174-foot spire with a clock, surrounded by columns and decorated with stained glass windows throughout its structure.

Warren Hastings laid the foundation stone in 1784, using stones from medieval Gour ruins transported along the Hooghly River for construction.

The church displays Johann Zoffany's Last Supper painting, which incorporates local community members as models for the biblical figures.

Visitors access the church through BBD Bagh area, with regular services held on Sundays and special celebrations during Christian festivals.

The church grounds contain the tomb of Job Charnock, considered Kolkata's founder, and house the relocated Black Hole of Calcutta Monument.

British colonial architecture in India

The British colonial period from 1800 to 1947 created a fusion of European and Indian architectural styles. Palaces, government buildings, churches and railway stations combine Victorian, Gothic and Indo-Saracenic elements. These structures in Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi and other cities demonstrate the cultural exchange of this era.

Tracing Kolkata's Past in India

Kolkata's monuments include the white marble Victoria Memorial, the Dakshineswar Kali Temple on the Hooghly River, the Indian Museum with its ancient collections, and Science City with its planetarium. Religious heritage includes the neo-Gothic St. Paul's Cathedral, historic synagogues, and Hindu temples. Traditional markets like New Market and the artisan district of Kumartuli reflect local culture. The colonial buildings of BBD Bagh and the Writers Building are reminders of the British past.
